We have so many new and young families who have decided to make Mount Pearl their home, and to raise their children in this beautiful community. And why not? My parents made that decision for our family over 35 years ago, and Mount Pearl was a great and providing community to me and my family. I couldn’t think of a better place for a family to grow up.
While going door to door, I’ve had the opportunity to chat with many of these young folks, some new to their neighborhood, about what issues are important to them. Many who I spoke with are worried about the high cost of childcare. It was a concern I heard over and over again.
Some parents are dedicating full incomes to providing care for their children. While other parents feel pressured to stay at home, as a more affordable option. There were many young folks feeling frustrated and stressed about their very limited options for child care, when being an at home parent was simply not a possibility. Other families were depending on grandparents for support. I heard many stories, and I would like to thank those who shared with me. Your stories are valued and I have been listening carefully.
Our province needs to be taking better care of our families. I believe the best way to do this is, is through affordable and flexible childcare options. This is something we’ve seen work in Quebec and throughout the globe. Childcare should not be a burden, that limits a family’s choices or ability to live and work as they desire.
As your MHA, I commit to advocating for affordable childcare options.
